Mark Edward Brown Visits the Suwon Fortress

Mark Edward Brown at Suwon Fortress     I recently visited the Suwon Hwaseong Fortress which is an 18th Century Korean Fortress.  This was truly an adventure that I will not soon forget.  The sights and sounds of a day spent with the generous people of southern Korea was one of the most memorable days that I have had in my time on the Korean peninsula.

This palace was built in 1789 on the east side of Mount Paldal and was completed in 1794 to 1796.  Additionally, it was reconstructed and restored in 2003.

The first aspect that made my jaw drop was the size of this sprawling compound.  The archetecture is awe inspiring and the vivid colors as well as ingenuity of construction are simply, marvelous.

Before I entered the palace there was a martial arts demonstration that was composed of the 24 martial arts styles that were adapted from Chinese and Japanese arts that were melded to practical use during the late 1700′s by the inhabitants of this fortress and community.

I really think I could go back and learn even more a second time then the first.  I also must thank my guides who are world class liaisons of the Korean culture, their names must remain unpublished as I want to respect their privacy.  They know who they are and the special time we had that day.

I hope you have enjoyed this short description of the Suwon Fortress, if so leave me a comment and let me know what you liked?

Mark Edward Brown Earns Black Belt!

Black Belt image at Mark Edward Brown's BlogMonday 3 January 2011 will be a day that I will always remember.  I spent virtually all of the New Year’s holiday weekend in intensly focused preparation for my Black Belt test in the Tae Kwon Do class that I have been attending since I arrived here at my current assignment in south Korea.

When I was a teen ager and in jr. high and high school I studied Tae Kwon Do as well and I always told myself that if I ever made it to Korea I wanted to complete my martial arts studies with a Korean Grand Master and visit the Kukiwon which is the world headquarters of Tae Kwon Do.

Part of my dream came true when I tested for an was awarded my first degree black belt.  I tested with a fellow student and friend, David Dewey.  My instructor is Grand Master Sung-Kyu Choe.  I am planning a visit to the world Tae Kwon Do headquarters and have learned that my instruction and journey as a martial artist is only just beginning.

Goth Breakers and Martial Arts on Mark Edward Brown’s Blog

As a kid I tried my darndest to learn to breakdance and while I could bust a couple of moves I was never destined to win a breakdance competition.

As I grew into my late teens I studied Karate and Tae Kwon Do so I have always had a deep appreciation of the martial arts, so much so that I have resumed my training of Tae Kwon Do while stationed in Korea; the birthplace of Tae Kwon Do.

The dark and mysterious style that is “Goth” is not new to me however I could never really be solemn enough to follow the dark style that the style embodies.

Watch the video above for a true lesson about how not to judge a book by it’s cover and then leave me a comment and tell me what you think about it

Always expect the un-expected,

P.S. – special thanks to my friend Sasha Ilic for sharing this with me on Facebook.
