Developing Good Leadership Skills

A consultant friend of mine is often hired for his expertise on workplace leadership. Although few people realize it, there are many different leadership styles out there.  In a recent conversation we had we discussed how to develop good leadership skills.

Some leaders prefer a very hands-on approach, trying to get involved in everything that is going on. Others prefer to step back and allow their underlings to shine. But whatever leadership styles are exhibited in your workplace, you will get much higher productivity if you make sure that your leaders are the strongest they can be.

Leadership skills training is designed to do exactly that. The problem is, there are a baffling variety of leadership skills training programs, and no two are the same. Some of them, in fact, are quite awful. I first became interested in leadership skills training about 10 years ago. I was in one of those old-school seminars involving ropes courses, team building activities, and all of that other Boy Scout type studd. Although it was fun for some of us to pretend we were 15 again for a weekend, I doubt we really gained anything from it. The leadership skills training program was ridiculous, and the instructors were just like camp counselors. We were grown men, and it was insulting to our intelligence to subject us to such a program.

This is what led my friend to develop his own leadership skills training seminars. It became obvious that Good Leadership Skills training usually fell into one of two groups. The philosophy was either dog eat dog, or all for one. In other words, leadership skills training was either based on a totally individualistic perspective in which the goal was to do as well for yourself as possible, or on a team-based perspective in which you’re supposed to do everything so that the team itself could succeed. Neither of these leadership skills training philosophies seemed to work for him so he wanted to work on something else.

For me, the key to successful leadership skills training is to encourage independent thought. It is not important to indoctrinate your clients with some philosophy of self-actualization, or of collective benefit. Presumably, they are mature enough to tackle such philosophical questions on their own. Leadership skills training is all about skills. It is about allowing people to develop their natural leadership abilities to best work in a style that they choose. Leadership programs help the most when they allow people to develop their own personal managerial styles.

What’s your leadership style?  Leave me a comment and let me know.

The Effective Leader

Many people have developed a deep distrust of bosses or managers, which is often due to their experience with current or past managers. They turn to the informal leaders – fellow workers who have gained their respect and whose opinions and actions they admire and emulate. The effective leader recognizes the influence these men and women have in the acceptance of new ideas among their followers.

If you think that your leadership abilities are deteriorating then check the following 6 tips:

1. The job of the manager has changed and evolved. You can no longer be a “boss.”, those days are long gone you must now step up to the plate and become a leader.

2. Too often managers get too complacent and they think their management style is working well, when in fact, it isn’t working at all.

3. Evaluate how you are leading by identifying areas in which you must change.

4. Study and research the traits of great leaders in the past and present. Learn from them – Emulate them.

5. Have a clear vision of what you wish to accomplish. Articulate it, communicate it, stick to it.

6. Commit yourself to take whatever action is necessary to become not just an average, but a great leader.

Use these tips to improve your leadership style and you wont go wrong.

Personal Best Recorded For Warrior Leader

The past week was one of the most memorable and hectic of my entire life, it tested all of my skills as both a warrior and a leader, here’s the rundown; some parts are a blur so bear with me, around 45 – 60 days ago I was chosen by my boss and his boss to assume a new leadership position, when my boss told me it blew my mind.

For the past year, just under 12 months I have been the Commander of an Initial Entry and Advanced Individual Training / One Station Unit Training Company most folks know it as “Boot Camp”.  At around the 8 month mark of this assignment my boss informed me that I was the best Commander out of the 7 Commanders that worked for him, while this was good news the news I recieved from my boss’s boss later that week really humbled me; my boss’s boss told me that he considered me in the running for number one or at least in the top 2 out of 21 Commanders that were in his organization!

Because of my demonstrated leadership style and future potential they gave me a new assignment, they were moving me out of their organization all together and sending me to a new one that is brand new, in fact it is 1 out of 4 that are in existance today.  I take leadership very seriously, I am patriotic and this news gave me an all time “high” and sense of achievement that I have never felt before in my life, all I could do was thank God and the great leaders, coaches and mentors that I have worked with throughout my life.

Now that you have the background let’s just say that every day last week was a major milestone because there was some kind of significant event that had to happen in order for the endstate to be achieved and for all the right outcomes to fall into place.  Being a leader in the U.S. Military has created such a strong foundation that I am considering sharing my success mindset / warrior leader training with other people who are not in the military.

I have applied it to the Home Business and Internet Marketing Industries and proven that the strategies that I have learned and use every day work both in the arena of personnal as well as financial success.

If you are a leader or want to become one let me know your thoughts, I would like to mastermind with you to create a winning team, leave a comment here on my blog or send me an e-mail at Mark at MarkEdwardBrown dot Com
