Mark Edward Brown get’s stuck in an ice storm

Ice Storm image on Mark Edward Brown's blogIt’s official, I have been without my laptop for one week and I am going through withdraw ;-} Seriously though, my family and I were going to leave South Dakota today to return to our home in Missouri however due to a recent ice storm and poor road conditions we are holding off on returning until tomorrow.

We spent time with my parents as well as my sisters and their kids, my wife’s parents and my sister in law and her husband too. We really have had allot of fun and one of the most memorable things I did was going to Bingo night hosted by the American Legion in Tyndall, South Dakota.

If it sounds like I really haven’t done much you are right however that is exactly the way I like it. When I am on vacation I simply like to spend time with my family and relatives and catch up on what has been going on with them.

I try to cut through the small talk and get right to what’s really been going on. Time is short and valuable as well so I really do cherish the time I have had to be with my loved ones.

Being away from my laptop and only online for limited amounts of time has really given me allot of time to reflect and take an introspective look at what’s important to me in my life at this point in time. My Dad has just retired from being a truck driver, having the time to talk to him about his transition and getting advice from him is worth money in the bank to me (thanks Dad).

I have about one week left before I return to my duties as an officer in the military. I will have less than 11 months remaining in my current assignment when I reach South Korea. I have a unique assignment and work with the best leaders and Soldiers one could ever imagine so for now I will cherish the time I have left and prepare for the travel ahead.

I’ll post again soon, until then leave me a comment and tell me what’s been going on with you?

Sneak Peak at 2 of Mark Edward Brown’s Bosses

It’s not often that I talk about my work in the military, it’s not that I am not proud of my service to the United States of America and all of you that are patriots as well, it’s because I like, respect and still enjoy what I do even after over 20+ years of doing it.

I love the variety that it offers both in locations to work and people to meet and interact with.  I get paid to be a leader and stay physically and mentally fit.

In my current leadership role I actually have 3 Bosses and I like to work with them all, I am not saying that because I am a kiss ass and they may read this (I doubt they will) and this is more for my friends and family so what I am about to share with you is an article that was just published in the local paper here in Korea where I am stationed.  There is one picture of two of my bosses and me plus a write up of the changing of my unit’s name.  The name of the paper is The Morning Calm and both the article and photo are from the paper which you can see here:

Confinement facility caretaker unit re-designated
By Steven Hoover

US Army Correctional Activity - Korea Redesignation  USAG Humphreys Public Affairs HUMPHREYS GARRISON, Korea

— The 249th Military Police Detachment, caretakers of the U.S. Army Regional Correctional Facility here, was re-designated as the U.S. Army Correctional Activity-Korea, USACA-K, in an Oct. 1 ceremony in M.P. Hill Gym.

The organization provides theater level pretrial and short-term post trial confinement services, maintains liaison activities for Status of Forces Agreement
prisoners, conducts prisoner transfers to stateside facilities and expands confinement operations to accommodate 114 prisoners during transition to hostilities.

“For the past 50 years, Military Police men and women have been providing correctional excellence on behalf of the U.S. Army,” said Capt. Mark E. Brown, USACA-K commander. “History is being recorded once again by the re-designation of the 249th Military Police Detachment and the Eighth Army Corrections Facility and the activation of the U.S. Army Correctional Activity-Korea and the U.S. Army Regional Correctional Facility-Korea.

“Our mission…remains the same,” he added. “Our standards of excellence will not waiver and I assure you that on behalf of the guard force and leadership, our commitment to the community remains unchanged.”

The 249th was originally constituted on Aug. 23, 1943 as the 249th Military Police Company and activated on Sept. 10, 1943 at Camp O’Reilly on Zandry Field, in Dutch Guiana. It was re-designated on Feb. 28, 1946 and the 249th Military Police Guard Platoon and then inactivated on June 3, 1946 on Gandery Field in Suriname.

The unit was once again re-designated as the 249th Military Police Guardhouse and Stockade Detachment on June 20, 1952 and activated on July 14, 1942 at Camp Chaffee, Ark. On Oct. 4, 1954 the unit was re-designated to the unit formerly known as the 249th Military Police Detachment. The unit was then inactivated on May 1, 1959 at Camp Chaffee and later, on June 24, 1960, activated in Korea.

Earlier this year, the confinement facility was awarded re-accreditation for the third consecutive time by the American Correctional Association. The ACA standards address services, programs and operations essential to effective correctional management.

There you have it, small glimpse at a part of the current chapter in my life.  Please leave a comment and share your thoughts and thank you,

“Y” not why You should be a Leader

Letter Y

A very serious question has been stuck in my mind lately, in fact it has almost been haunting me.  I have pondered, prayed and almost worried about it.  What is it you ask?

The question is not about what I want to do nor what you should want to do, or not.  It’s all about “Y” not “why”!

I am not sure that you are following me so please allow me to explain.  Every one of us spends allot of time fantasizing, day dreaming and wondering what we are going to do when we grow up, retire or get rich.

However I believe the question we should be asking ourselves is why do we want to do all of the stuff that we think about?  I am going to boil this down to a one letter answer and then I will explain – are you ready?

The answer is not why, it’s “Y“!

If you really want to accomplish what you dream about you have to make a decision and then take some action and the lettery Y is the best road map to use in order to get where you want to go.  The letter Y is made up of one straight line that that divirges to the left and to the right.  When making the decision what you want to do approach your dilemna as if you were driving down the road approaching a decision point as in the letter Y example I just explained.  You either go to the left or to the right, you either make a decision to change or you continue to go the same way you have been going.

If you have been struggling about how to become a leader change your point of reference and approach it from Y you should be a leader not why you should be a leader.

Here are 3 quick ways that you can explore that will help you with Y you should become a leader and stop being a follower:

1) Read a book on leadership.

2) Watch a movie about leadership.

3) Join a leadership organization and learn about leadership.

All three of the methods above will allow you to define Y you should be a leader as well as catapult you towards your goal.  Instead of remaining a follower step out and begin your journey, you now know how and Y so get started!
